"Bound" Sculpture by Roshni Senapati
These hand crafted ceramic sculptures by Brisbane artist Roshni Senapati explore the idea of memory, cultural connection and family history. Bound feature two materials, porcelain and repurposed silk threads which are drawn from textiles worn or used by her mother. In each knotted thread resides a story. It is rich in memories of people and place and opens conversations about family gatherings and shared times, about rituals and practices. Each gold knot captures a moment in time and anchors memories to the vessel wall. The porcelain vessels reflect the colour and feel of silk and serve as memory keepers, a powerful holding space of ancestral history and cultural tradition.
Bound works with the image of layered thoughts as Roshni builds a ‘memory-scape’ into the wall of the vessels, made such that the lines and method of making are evident like striations in a landscape. Little gaps or pierced holes evocative of memory lapses serve as a point of connection between the two materials. Silk threads are inserted into the openings to bind memories with a knot or stitches.
